When I started to learn programming, roughly 4 years ago, I started with Python to automate some of my tasks during my PhD. However, that was not the first time I dipped into the waters of coding. Since my masters I do some R Programming for analyzing data and plotting graphs, but never really wrote functions, created classes or actually wrote programs I could start with the click of a button. Python was my first programming language i used to handle large text files, in bioinformatics called “fasta files”, which store genetic code. I needed to do a lot of string manipulations and did not know how do it. Too my luck, we had an awesome data manager, who was keen to help me and introduced me to python. We started a python programming club and found like-minded people within our institute. We automated tasks, wrote programs and had fun. Looking back, I think that was the first time I thought about a career change, where I could program, automate tasks and model data. Did not know that this is called a Data Scientist at the time.
